Homeland Security secretary grilled over Trump comments
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen faced heated questions from Democratic lawmakers on Tuesday over her recollections of a White House meeting in which President Trump described some poor countries sending immigrants to the United States as “shithole countries.”

The remarks have set off a days-long firestorm, raising the odds of a government shutdown this weekend and emboldening Democrats to demand that a fix protecting certain undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children be included as part of a deal.

WH: Dems using ‘s---hole’ comment as ‘excuse’ to not reach DACA deal
The White House on Tuesday pushed back on the notion that President Trump’s “shithole countries” comments derailed negotiations on immigration and spending.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders blamed Democrats for the stalled talks.

“I think they’re using it as an excuse not to help this president get something accomplished, which I think is a sad day for our country,” she told reporters outside the West Wing.
