McCarthy: 'This is my life now.' |

The House just plunged into chaos with an increasing chance of a government shutdown after an insurrection this morning during a GOP meeting. What happened: Rank-and-file Republicans are now expressing outrage that the Senate-passed seven-week spending bill does not include disaster relief or $5 billion in border wall funding. http://bit.ly/2R8TwRT And Trump escalated things: The president tweeted, "When I begrudgingly signed the Omnibus Bill, I was promised the Wall and Border Security by leadership. Would be done by end of year (NOW). It didn't happen! We foolishly fight for Border Security for other countries - but not for our beloved U.S.A. Not good!" HAPPENING NOW -- please go well, please go well: President Trump is currently meeting with House Republicans as frustration is building over the lack of border wall funding in the short-term funding bill. http://bit.ly/2BuBTCo Where Republicans stand: "Republicans are all over the place on this spending bill. Members who are typically leadership allies are saying they'd vote no on the short term bill... things went sideways fast. People saying they don't want to go over the cliff w/ out the wall if Trump won't sign the bill." (Via NPR's Kelsey Snell) http://bit.ly/2V0HBVl Oooof: Via NBC's Kasie Hunt, "On the House floor, leaders scrambling to see if they can pass $5 billion in wall funding as Republicans say they want President Trump to tweet before they say 'yes.'" One GOP member of Congress told her: "That's what the fuck serving in Congress has come to." http://bit.ly/2ScolT7 ^What could happen today re: border wall funding: "Path today might be putting $5 billion in wall funding on the House floor, likely going down -- to prove it can't pass Then possibly proceed to a clean CR vote?" http://bit.ly/2PSAZ7Z Tidbit: After the Senate passed the seven-week spending bill last night, a number of Senate Democrats sang Christmas carols on the Senate floor. Oh, how the mood has changed. http://bit.ly/2rLQpkR |

Oh and I should mention -- we aren't out of the woods even if the House passes a bill: |
If the House comes to an agreement and passes the short-term spending bill, it will then go to President Trump's desk. There is still a chance that President Trump will veto the measure. The mood in the White House this morning -- some nervousness: "I've spoken to multiple senior White House aides this morning who have no idea what the plan is for the stopgap spending bill. Concerns he might veto are rampant." (Via Politico's Jake Sherman) http://bit.ly/2A7lxj8 |

INTERESTING TIDBIT -- TIMING OF THE NEXT POTENTIAL SHUTDOWN DEADLINE: |
"A few sharp Hill hands remind me that Pelosi as speaker could decide to invite Trump for [the State of the Union address] on the day on or after shutdown deadline... timing will be at her discretion and she could make it quite a rough week for POTUS to head to [the Capitol.]" (Via The Washington Post's Robert Costa) http://bit.ly/2EEM1fS |

Trump: Stop trying to make Syria happen. It's not going to happen: |
This morning, President Trump defended his decision to pull U.S. troops out of Syria. http://bit.ly/2BvVWQT He tweeted: "Getting out of Syria was no surprise. I've been campaigning on it for years, and six months ago, when I very publicly wanted to do it, I agreed to stay longer. Russia, Iran, Syria & others are the local enemy of ISIS. We were doing there [sic] work. Time to come home & rebuild. #MAGA." Read the full series of tweets: http://bit.ly/2ED9iOe |
|
KEEP IN MIND: |
Trump's decision to remove U.S. troops from Syria was met with opposition by a bipartisan group of senators. http://bit.ly/2AiqfLh Which senators: Sens. Lindsey Graham( R-S.C.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Angus King (I-Maine), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) Excerpt of the letter from those senators: "If you decide to follow through with your decision to pull our troops out of Syria, any remnants of ISIS in Syria will surely renew and embolden their efforts in the region. ... However, ISIS is not the only threat. The brutal dictatorship of Bashar al Assad continues to weigh heavily upon the Syrian people, and we fear that a withdrawal of our troops may embolden Bashar al Assad to take further actions to solidify his power." |

LATEST WITH THE MUELLER INVESTIGATION | |
Can someone please photoshop Robert Mueller's face onto the 'We Want You' poster?: |
Via The Washington Post's Carol D. Leonnig, Ellen Nakashima, Rosalind S. Helderman and Manuel Roig-Franzia, special counsel Robert Mueller has requested testimony that President Trump's former adviser Roger Stone gave to the House Intelligence Committee. https://wapo.st/2LtrmvY Keep in mind about the House committee: "It is the first time Mueller has formally asked the committee to turn over material the panel has gathered in its investigation of Russian interference of the 2016 campaign." Why this is important for Stone: "The move suggests that the special counsel is moving to finalize his months-long investigation of Stone -- a key part of Mueller's inquiry into whether anyone in President Trump's orbit coordinated with the Russians." Reaction from Stone: "This has devolved into gotcha word games, perjury traps and trumped-up process crimes," Stone said. "I think people can see through the political motivations behind this." https://wapo.st/2LtrmvY |

JUST NOW -- RELEASE THE TRANSCRIPTS!: |
The House Intelligence Committee just voted to release the witness transcript of Roger Stone to special counsel Robert Mueller. http://bit.ly/2POJsc5 |

Don Lemon rolls the tape: |
CNN host Don Lemon shared 1999 footage of President Trump touting his knowledge of campaign finance. In Trump's words: "I think nobody knows more about campaign finance than I do because I'm the biggest contributor." Watch: http://bit.ly/2QGQ3dT Why this matters at all: "Trump's knowledge of campaign finance laws may be key in any future criminal proceedings against him, experts say, as prosecutors would need to prove that the president knowingly violated the law in order to secure a conviction against him." http://bit.ly/2QGQ3dT |

What to expect in 2019 -- *Cue screaming while the camera zooms out to a view from space*: |
Via The Hill's Scott Wong and Mike Lillis, "Despite harsh post-election rhetoric, the legislative results of the past few weeks suggest a Democratic House and Republican Senate could work together to send significant pieces of legislation to President Trump's desk in 2019. But such a scenario is far from certain, especially now that the 2020 presidential cycle has already begun, and some House Democrats want their leaders to impeach Trump next year."
