LATEST ON SESSIONS'S OUSTER

And another one gone, and another one gone:

President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replaced him with a Trump loyalist. Why Trump didn't like Sessions: "Over the past year, Sessions became a frequent punching back for Trump as he fumed over special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential collusion between his campaign and Moscow. Trump has repeatedly lashed out at his attorney general over his recusal from the investigation and other alleged failures." http://bit.ly/2F9vqBZ

How Trump made the announcement: On Twitter.

Video of Sessions leaving the Department of Justice yesterday: He got an ovation from staff. http://bit.ly/2yWR86M

'HOW SESSIONS'S FIRING COULD AFFECT THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION':

Via The New York Times's Charlie Savagehttps://nyti.ms/2yU9aX6

HAPPENING AT 5 P.M. AROUND THE COUNTRY:

"Progressive groups are organizing hundreds of protests across the country on Thursday calling for special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation to be protected after President Trump installed a new official to oversee the probe."  http://bit.ly/2SXoZEM

Next up in the tank (temporarily):

Matthew Whitaker, who served as chief of staff to ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions, will replace Sessions as acting attorney general until a permanent replacement is chosen. http://bit.ly/2SSOYgR

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT WHITAKER:
  1. Whitaker criticized the Mueller probe
  2. Whitaker believed there was a 'strong' case against Clinton
  3. Whitaker defended Donald Trump Jr. for taking the Trump Tower meeting
  4. Whitaker is friends with Sam Clovis, previously Trump's campaign co-chair, who is entangled in the Mueller probe.
  5. Whitaker is considered a Trump loyalist

Details and context for each: http://bit.ly/2SSOYgR

New on whether Whitaker will recuse himself from the Russia investigation:

Via The Washington Post's Devlin Barrett, Matt Zapotosky and Josh Dawsey, "Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker has no intention of recusing himself from overseeing the special counsel probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, according to people close to him who added they do not believe he would approve any subpoena of President Trump as part of that investigation." https://wapo.st/2PLstLL

New development -- Chris Christie is being considered as the next AG:

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) is on the list of contenders who may replace Jeff Sessions at the Department of Justice. Who else is on the list: Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani, outgoing Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi (R) and former Attorney General William Barrhttps://cbsn.ws/2ASSyAk

LATEST WITH THE MIDTERMS

Whoa, Election Day was less than 48 hours ago...

This a.m. -- Kemp resigns as Georgia secretary of state:

"Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp is stepping down from his post as Georgia secretary of state, effective Thursday night. Kemp's move comes as he remains locked in a close campaign against Democrat Stacey Abrams, a race that national outlets have yet to call." http://bit.ly/2zADN3x

Why Trump thinks he won the midterms:

Via The Hill's Niall Stanage, "the claim is clearly one-sided, given the Democratic takeover of the House -- but it's not nearly as ridiculous as some of his critics appear to believe." Why: "The wholesale repudiation of the president that the Democrats had been hoping for didn't materialize. Trump's control on his own party is firmer than ever. His base-first strategy worked in enough places, enough of the time." I.e.: It will be harder than Democrats had thought to remove Trump from office in 2020. How this could play out: http://bit.ly/2D9Hqkd

MEANWHILE IN FLORDIA -- WOULD IT EVEN BE AN ELECTION IF FLORIDA WASN'T UNCOMFORTABLY CLOSE:

"Florida's gov race is only 0.02% points from heading to a recount (automatically triggered by a 0.5 point margin)

DeSantis votes: 4,066,056 or 49.65%

Gillum votes: 4,023,108 or 49.13%" http://bit.ly/2qCm2N4

TALK OF THE MEDIA WORLD

No access for you!:

Via The Hill's Jordan Fabian, the White House yanked the press pass of CNN's Jim Acosta after a heated back-and-forth with President Trumphttp://bit.ly/2yXKmO7

Why this is newsy: "The move is a dramatic escalation of Trump's ongoing battle with the news media and comes one day after the president's party lost control of the House." http://bit.ly/2yXKmO7

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted: "President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable." She then added: "As a result of today's incident, the White House is suspending the hard pass of the reporter involved until further notice." http://bit.ly/2QuJJlU

If we can just never speak of InfoWars again, that'd be great. Thanks.:

--> http://bit.ly/2Fo2Dd9

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted video of the incident, but some have been speculating that the video she linked to may have been doctored by the conspiracy theory website InfoWars. https://wapo.st/2DbhhBK

From The Washington Post: "Side-by-side comparisons support claims from fact-checkers and experts such as Jonathan Albright, research director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University, who argued that crucial parts of the video appear to have been sped up or altered so as to distort the action." Full reasoning: https://wapo.st/2DbhhBK

Video from NBC News: http://bit.ly/2AU77DT

The video from Sanders: http://bit.ly/2JOE7jO

Keep in mind: InfoWars = Alex Jones, who has been banned from most social media platforms because of his often-harmful conspiracy theories. Think: He started the conspiracy theory that the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., was a hoax perpetrated by crisis actors. More about Jones from CNBC: https://cnb.cx/2DtBdR6
