TALK OF THE MORNING

*Cuing our inner George-W-Bush-overheard-at-Trump's-inauguration-last-year* -- 'That was some weird s---.':

Back story if you don't remember that reference --> http://nym.ag/2oAmPuH

The consensus on President Trump's joint press conference yesterday with Russian President Vladimir Putin: bizarre. http://bit.ly/2zMn94b

Via The Hill's Niall Stanage, here are five takeaways:

  1. A jaw-dropper, even by Trump's standards-- Trump stating he believes Russia over the intelligence community is pretty stunning.
  2. Republicans and outside allies join chorus of disapproval-- Democrats, Republicans and sympathetic media outlets are all critical of Trump's performance.
  3. A very good day for Putin-- Putin must be thrilled.
  4. Any good news for Trump got lost-- Trump's prepared remarks were substantive, but the off-the-cuff remarks have dominated any positive news.
  5. All eyes on what's next-- This will likely dominate the news cycle and that's grim news for Trump.

Context and details for each: http://bit.ly/2LgvwJW

LATE THIS A.M. -- TRUMP REACTS:

President Trump criticized the media, accusing them of unfairly covering his meeting with Russian President Vladimir PutinHe tweeted: "While I had a great meeting with NATO, raising vast amounts of money, I had an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russia. Sadly, it is not being reported that way -- the Fake News is going Crazy!" http://bit.ly/2uvtJab

ALSO THIS MORNING -- RYAN WEIGHED IN:

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis) just told reporters he doesn't believe Trump's comments amounted to treason. But Ryan did add: "Vladimir Putin does not share our interests; Vladimir Putin does not share our values. ... [Russia] did interfere in our elections. Let me be really clear. There should be no doubt about that. It's also clear that it did not have a material effect on our elections." http://bit.ly/2uDk1So

AND TO ROUND THINGS OUT — OBAMA ALSO WEIGHED IN THIS MORNING:

Former President Barack Obama appeared to rebuke Trump during the 2018 Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture. In Obama’s words: "Unfortunately, too much of politics today seems to reject the very concept of objective truth. People just make stuff up ... we see the utter loss of shame among political leaders where they're caught in a lie and they just double down.” Watch: http://bit.ly/2uuyf8W

THE GIST OF REPUBLICANS' REACTION

--> http://bit.ly/2Jt8PgE:

Republican lawmakers, including prominent voices on national security and foreign policy, were highly critical of Trump's performance. The sharpest criticism: Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who has expressed confidence in Trump's national security team, called Trump's comments "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory." http://bit.ly/2Lis3dH

OUTSIDE THE WHITE HOUSE -- A FLURRY OF PROTESTS:

Protesters chanted outside of the White House last night. Video from BuzzFeed's Tarini Parti: http://bit.ly/2uvDGEx

It's Tuesday -- D.C. is buzzing for the MLB All-Star Game tonight. I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com@CateMartel and on Facebook.

NEWS THIS A.M.

*Cues auction voice* -- 'And we have a Republican!':

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) is the first House Republican lawmaker to back a bill to reinstate the Federal Communications Commission's net neutrality rules. Keep in mind: Coffman is also one of the most vulnerable Republicans up for reelection. http://bit.ly/2LfB5Ix

The chances the bill will move forward -- very, very slim: "That bill has little chance of advancing in a Republican-controlled Congress. And the [Congressional Review Act] bill still needs about two dozen more GOP House members to back the discharge petition to bring it to the floor." http://bit.ly/2LfB5Ix

IN OTHER NEWS

Meet the man behind the DNC's cybersecurity:

Via The Hill's Morgan Chalfant, after stunning cyberattacks of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) resulted in high-level officials' emails leaked online, DNC Chairman Tom Perez hired Raffi Krikorian to overhaul the DNC's cybersecurity tools. What Krikorian has been up to: "Krikorian has brought his Silicon Valley skills to bear in the political world, laser-focused on beefing up the security know-how of the party's staff." His interview with The Hill: http://bit.ly/2uvCGjE
