Back story — negotiators now accepting any and all congratulations: |
| Last night, lawmakers reached an agreement "in principle" to avoid another partial government shutdown. http://bit.ly/2WZU7ps 'Well that was easy!': This agreement came after the core negotiators met three times (!) last night. What's the deal?: "A congressional source told The Hill that the bill will include $1.375 billion for physical barriers, the same amount included in the 2018 fiscal year bill. The tentative agreement, according to the source, also specifically prohibits the use of a concrete wall. But senior congressional aides separately noted that it will fund approximately 55 new miles of barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border in the Rio Grande Valley sector." ^ Keep in mind: Trump has demanded $5.7 billion in border wall funding, and this deal may not increase the 2018 funding. I.e.: That would be a win for Democrats. What about the cap on ICE beds?: Lawmakers refused to discuss the outcome of that debate. Back story: Over the weekend, Democrats demanded that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reduces the number of detention beds. It isn't a given that both parties will vote for the deal: "Progressive Democrats may not want to cast votes to fund any measure of physical barriers, while conservative Republicans could balk at any potential limits on ICE or details they see as too soft on border security." |
