TALK OF THE MORNING
'Fake News' /noun/: A story that angers the current president:

President Trump poses with his shiny, new, "fake news" whistle.

This morning, President Trump took swipes at the major news networks for being "fake news," suggesting they are "jealous" of Sinclair Broadcasting Group. He tweeted: "The Fake News Networks, those that knowingly have a sick and biased AGENDA, are worried about the competition and quality of Sinclair Broadcast. The "Fakers" at CNN, NBC, ABC & CBS have done so much dishonest reporting that they should only be allowed to get awards for fiction!" http://bit.ly/2GxqmDE

WHAT SPARKED THIS TWEET -- YIKES:

Over the weekend, a Deadspin clip showed dozens of Sinclair journalists around the country reading a scripted message warning of media bias and "fake news" in unison. The clip went viral -- it's worth watching: http://bit.ly/2q46iCs

REACTION TO THE SINCLAIR SCRIPT -- NOT PRETTY:

The anti-"fake news" script has faced a whirlwind of criticism. For example: watch HBO host John Oliver respond to the clip on "Last Week Tonight" -- it's pretty brutal: http://bit.ly/2GxTD11

THEN LAST NIGHT -- SINCLAIR'S EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN FIRES BACK:

In emails to New York magazine last night, Sinclair Broadcasting Group executive chairman David Smith lashed out against critics of the ad campaign. He said: "Facts and truth have been lost for a long time and likely to never return. The print media is so left wing as to be meaningless dribble which accounts for why the industry is and will fade away. Just no credibility." Full statement: https://nym.ag/2JhMx2A

It's all about the media this morning, huh?:

President Trump specifically went after CNN this morning, criticizing CNN president Jeff Zucker. CNN's public relations team then fired back. The back and forth: http://bit.ly/2uO6Yka

REMEMBER THAT IRAN DEAL DEADLINE?

We're nearing fish-or-cut-bait time:

Via The Hill's Rebecca Kheel, the deadline set by President Trump to either change the Iran nuclear deal or effectively withdraw from it is nearing. The deadline: May 12. Back story: When Trump extended Iran's sanctions relief in January, he pledged it would be the last time unless European allies agree to a supplemental deal to fix what the president sees as the fundamental problems with the nuclear pact negotiated by the Obama administration. The current situation: While negotiations with the Europeans are ongoing, hopes for a solution are increasingly fading. The likely scenario: http://bit.ly/2Hat3fC

LATEST WITH THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION

Just now — first sentence in the Mueller probe:

A federal judge sentenced Dutch lawyer Alex van der Zwaan to 30 days in prison for lying to federal investigators in the first criminal sentence to result from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. His charges: Van der Zwaan pleaded guilty in late February to making “materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statements and representations” to the special counsel’s office and FBI agents. Full story: http://bit.ly/2q0tTnI

Bob Mueller, do your thing:

The Department of Justice explicitly authorized special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate collusion between President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the Russian government. How we know: A court filing last night in which Mueller's team defended its investigation. Full details: http://bit.ly/2IoCgA9 Court filing reported by The Associated Press: http://bit.ly/2JbPUb3

IN OTHER NEWS

To-mato, to-mahto, Mnuchin, Muzinich:

Yesterday, President Trump announced he's planning to nominate Justin Muzinich to be deputy Treasury secretary. What to know about Muzinich: As a Treasury Department aide, he was involved in the administration's tax-cut efforts. OK, OK, so we have: Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Deputy Treasury Secretary Justin Muzinich. That's not confusing at all. http://bit.ly/2uIVDSr

A new take on a familiar story line -- "Teenagers vs. _____":

Via The Hill's Niall Stanage, the young activists who have pressed for stricter gun control since the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla., in February have got under the right's skin, even as the success of their broader push for legislative change remains uncertain. Keep in mind: Veterans of previous social change movements say that the furious reactions are signs that the protesters are gaining ground. http://bit.ly/2GtQkMl

UPDATE THIS MORNING -- FLORIDA MAYORS WANT AUTONOMY:

Ten mayors in South Florida are suing the state in an effort to gain the right to implement their own gun laws in their cities. Which mayors: From cities in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. http://bit.ly/2HaA1Bi

Ugh, can we stop messing with the classics??:

Via The Washington Post's Maura Judkis, a new 2018 food trend is adding edible glitter to unexpected foods. https://wapo.st/2GSdj2W

Aaand the worst -- rainbow glitter pizza: Oh my god, this looks vile. http://bit.ly/2ImMIZa
