NEWS THIS MORNING

North Korea's first report card -- D:

Via The Associated Press's Matthew Lee, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said North Korea is not close to its promise of denuclearization. How Pompeo worded it: There is "still a ways to go before" North Korea gets rid of its nuclear program. http://bit.ly/2OD1zCJ

The full Pompeo quote: Pompeo told reporters in Singapore: "Chairman Kim made a commitment to denuclearize. The world demanded that [he] do so in the U.N. Security Council resolutions. To the extent they are behaving in a manner inconsistent with that, they are in violation of one or both the U.N. Security Council resolutions. We can see we still have a ways to go to achieve the ultimate outcome we're looking for."

It's the first Friday of the month, and you know what that means!? Jobs!:

The U.S. economy added 157,000 jobs in July, which is well below expectations for the month. What was expected for July jobs: 190,000. The unemployment rate: The unemployment rate fell to 3.9 percent, from 4 percent. http://bit.ly/2LLU2Uh

BUT THE FULL PICTURE IS STILL PRETTY POSITIVE:

"Despite the lower-than-expected jobs gains, the labor market's produced 59,000 more jobs than previously reported in May and June. Employers added 268,000 jobs in May and 248,000 in June. ... Jobs growth has averaged 215,000 a month so far this year, above last year's pace of 182,000." http://bit.ly/2LLU2Uh

WHAT EVERYONE'S FOLLOWING ON TWITTER

This story is the GOAT (sorry, you know I had to make this joke)

But anyway, I have SO MANY questions about:

Via KTVB News, "Residents in a West Boise neighborhood woke up to an unusual sight Friday morning: About 100 goats strolling through their yards and down the street." Lol: "Animal Control responded to the scene with a single truck, but quickly realized that wasn't going to be enough." Full story: http://bit.ly/2OFooFL

IN OTHER NEWS

Everyone's an enemy these days:

Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, "When CNN's Jim Acosta was booed and cursed at a campaign rally for President Trump this week, many political observers said it exemplified how much the media environment has changed under the current administration -- and that it is a sign of what's to come." http://bit.ly/2McWXkW

WHAT ESCALATED THE FIGHT:

Yesterday, CNN's Jim Acosta walked out of the White House press briefing after press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders refused to answer a question on whether she agrees with the president that the press is the "enemy of the people." Watch: https://nyti.ms/2vFRY5t

EXCLUSIVE:

President Trump's former chief strategist Stephen Bannon laid into the Koch network, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and White House chief of staff John Kelly. What he had to say: http://bit.ly/2Mgr9f2

Prison reform -- Well that's a throwback:

Via The Hill's Alexander Bolton, "President Trump has told Republican senators that he's open to a new proposal on prison and sentencing reform, giving new life to an issue that seemed hopelessly stalled on Capitol Hill." The possible compromise, according to a source: The prison reform bill passed in the House in May, plus four sentencing reform provisions. http://bit.ly/2LSTlZv

Whoa -- a suspected Russian spy has been working at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow:

Via The Guardian's Nick Hopkins, "US counter-intelligence investigators discovered a suspected Russian spy had been working undetected in the heart of the American embassy in Moscow for more than a decade." What that means: "The Russian national had been hired by the US Secret Service and is understood to have had access to the agency's intranet and email systems, which gave her a potential window into highly confidential material including the schedules of the president and vice-president." Full story -- it's pretty crazy: http://bit.ly/2KnuA1R

Rest in peace:

Ignacio S. Sánchez, the first and only father to see two daughters serve in Congress simultaneously, passed away. His daughters: Rep. Linda T. Sánchez (D-Calif.) and former Rep. Loretta Sánchez (D-Calif.). http://bit.ly/2MfeGYS

California wildfires prompt deficit debate in Congress
Deadly wildfires in California could pose a spending challenge for Republican leaders in Washington ahead of the November midterms, putting Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) in a tough spot as he seeks the Speaker’s gavel.

McCarthy, along with Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), climbed the ranks of GOP leadership largely on promises to rein in deficit spending, which would increase if Congress passes yet another emergency relief bill without offsets in response to the ongoing disaster.

Exclusive: Bannon blasts 'con artist' Kochs, 'lame duck' Ryan, 'diminished' Kelly
Stephen Bannon is ratcheting up his war on the Koch network, accusing the billionaire brothers of running “a conscious scam” and a “con job.”

He also has a warning for Republican candidates in November’s midterm elections who might be thinking of distancing themselves from President Trump: Don’t do it.

GOP candidates need to get in lockstep with the president, Trump’s former chief strategist insists.
