Here's what we know: When and where are the mandatory evacuations: Mandatory evacuations are in place for coastal Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The mandatory evacuation for the South Carolina coastline is effective as of noon today. Details: https://cnn.it/2O6MkRH When Florence will make landfall: Thursday and early Friday, but storm-force winds could start Wednesday evening. Category: Florence is currently a Category 4 hurricane, but "some additional strengthening is possible, and it's not out of the question that Florence could come close to Category 5 status for a time." A warning for everyone on the East Coast: The hurricane is causing dangerous rip currents and waves along the East Coast. What to expect in the Washington, D.C., area: |
| Via The Capital Weather Gang, Washington is already saturated with rain, so a few inches of rain and wind could lead to serious flooding and falling trees. Specifically for the DMV: "Depending on the track of Category 4 Hurricane Florence, a storm surge could come up the tidal Potomac and Chesapeake like a bulldozer, pushing water multiple feet above normally dry land along their shores." And watch out for tornadoes: "In addition, quick-hitting tornadoes could form in some of the storm bands that pass through the region." | Journalist Garrett Graff published an oral history of the 9/11 attacks, told in short snippets by those on board Air Force One that day. Why it's so interesting: It gives a very detailed account from the perspective of President George W. Bush and his staff. If you read one 9/11 piece today, let it be this one: https://politi.co/2MmzrBk On the president's knowledge of the attack during a Florida event: "All of a sudden it hits me: The president's the only one who doesn't know that this plane has hit the second building. It was a discomfort to all of us that the president didn't know." (Via the Secret Service's Dave Wilkinson) On news coverage from the air: "We didn't know where we were going, but they must've been circling, because we kept watching the local feed of a Florida station going in and out. That was our tiny window into the outside world." Keep in mind: The plane didn't have satellite TV.
