GOP fights piling up for McConnell
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has a difficult two weeks ahead of him as he tries to navigate disputes within his conference over the lame-duck Congress’s final legislative goals.

McConnell, who prides himself in working with his Republican colleagues and allowing the GOP conference to work its will, finds himself in the middle of an increasingly public and bitter battle over criminal justice reform that pits President Trump, Jared Kushner and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee against a group of conservatives opposed to the bill.

The GOP leader is also at the center of a fight over Saudi Arabia, with some Republicans demanding tough legislation in response to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

Trump, Democrats start divisive wall negotiations
Don’t look for a quick deal when President Trump meets with Democratic leaders of Congress at the White House on Tuesday.

Neither side appears in the mood to offer concessions on a proposed border wall. President Trump is pushing for $5 billion to fund one of his top priorities, but House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is under intense pressure not to give in just weeks after her party’s midterm victories. She also has the Speaker’s gavel on the line.

Trump, for his part, has plenty to stew over: He just saw his pick for the next White House chief of staff turn down the position, and investigations of the 2016 campaign came to his doorstep last week, with prosecutors implicating him in illegal payments to silence women alleging affairs.
