Dem presidential field looks smaller than expected
The Democratic field in the 2020 election is shaping up to be much smaller than originally anticipated.

While more than half a dozen Democrats have declared they are running for president or launched exploratory committees, it’s a significantly smaller crowd than the estimated two or three dozen that were once mentioned as would-be contenders.

NEWS THIS MORNING

Trump teases the main event:

Let's do this thing!!

Setting the stage for tonight's State of the Union address, President Trump again pushed for a border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

He tweeted: "Tremendous numbers of people are coming up through Mexico in the hopes of flooding our Southern Border. We have sent additional military. We will build a Human Wall if necessary. If we had a real Wall, this would be a non-event!" http://bit.ly/2MOXvyA

Trump then criticized Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.): He tweeted, "I see Schumer is already criticizing my State of the Union speech, even though he hasn't seen it yet. He's just upset that he didn't win the Senate, after spending a fortune, like he thought he would. Too bad we weren't given more credit for the Senate win by the media!" http://bit.ly/2DUFZX2

It's a beautiful Tuesday in D.C. It feels like spring! I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com -- and follow along on Twitter @CateMartel and Facebook.

Five things to include on your SOTU Bingo cards:
  1. The speech is a much-needed reset button for President Trump.
  2. Trump and his aides have hinted at using tonight's speech to lay the groundwork for declaring a national emergency to fund the wall.
  3. Will there be a potential olive branch to Democrats? The dynamic this year is very different.
  4. Trump can finally explain his recent foreign policy moves in the Middle East to the American people (i.e.: Syria and Afghanistan).
  5. Will he share details of the next U.S.-North Korea summit? Trump has been teasing this announcement.

Top general says he wasn't consulted before Trump announced Syria withdrawal
The top U.S. general in charge of military operations in the Middle East on Tuesday said he was not consulted prior to President Trump's announcement that he would withdraw all 2,000 U.S. troops from Syria.

“I was not aware of the specific announcement,” U.S. Central Command (Centcom) commander Gen. Joseph Votel said while appearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Certainly we aware that he has expressed a desire and an intent in the past to depart Syria.”

Pressed further by Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) on whether he was not consulted ahead of Trump’s December announcement, Votel replied, “I was not consulted.”
