During President Trump's speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) this morning, President Trump announced new sanctions against North Korea aimed at hampering the country's growing nuclear weapons program. Details on the sanctions: They are geared at North Korea's shipping industry and vessels flagged as originating from the country. How big are the sanctions?: Trump and his administration billed them as the United States' "largest ever" tranche of sanctions against North Korea. http://bit.ly/2sOLfYG
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

On his first year -- I do declare!: Trump at CPAC: "My administration has had the most successful first year in the history of the presidency." http://bit.ly/2GHctlX

On ObamaCare: President Trump argued that ObamaCare is being "wiped out" in a "piece by piece" fashion despite the failure of the GOP Congress to repeal the law. http://bit.ly/2otm5t1

Oh and McCain got booed: "Trump just took a swipe at cancer-stricken Sen. John McCain by mocking how Mac gave the thumbs down on health care repeal bill. 'Boy oh boy, who was that? I don't know.'" http://bit.ly/2BMGSAb

On the Second Amendment: "Don't be complacent," Trump said. "If they get in, they will repeal your tax cuts, they will put judges in that you wouldn't believe, they'll take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen." http://bit.ly/2onBr37

When Trump discussed the Parkland, Fla., shooting: "The room is absolutely quiet right now." http://bit.ly/2BNLR3H

Trump: If there was an armed teacher: President Trump said that if a teacher had a gun, he or she would have "shot the hell out of" the gunman who killed 17 people at a Florida high school last week. http://bit.ly/2EOyQWe

On Democrats and Hillary Clinton: "After a round of 'LOCK HER UP!' chants, Trump says, 'Boy, have they committed a lot of atrocities.'"http://bit.ly/2GC8zLi

On gun free zones: President Trump slammed "gun-free zones" at schools. In his words: "When we declare our schools to be gun-free zones it just puts our students in more danger – well-trained gun-adept teachers and coaches should be able to carry concealed firearms." http://bit.ly/2FrfjMH

Protests?: As Trump began to run down his administration's biggest achievement -- tax reform and the confirmation of new federal judges -- a man toward the front of the stage began jeering him. The man was quickly removed from the hall as thousands of attendees, many of them wearing the Trump campaign's signature red "Make America Great Again" hats, booed him and chanted "USA." Watch: http://bit.ly/2GC8SFW

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS AT CPAC (NEVER DISAPPOINTING):

Day two of the convention for celebrating festive wardrobes:

Haha, I love this type of self-awareness from politicians: "Pres. Trump sees the video screen at CPAC, starts to admire his hair, tells audience, 'I try like hell to hide that bald spot, folks....'" http://bit.ly/2GDULzJ

 ^^Video -- it's pretty great: http://bit.ly/2on4x2J

Tidbit about security:

NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN THE RUSSIA INVESTIGATION:

Yesterday -- why Paul Manafort and Richard Gates had bad Thursdays:
Special counsel Robert Mueller filed new charges against former Trump campaign staffers Paul Manafort and Richard Gateshttp://bit.ly/2EN5k2W

How many counts: 32; 23 of the counts in the new indictment apply to Gates, while 13 apply to Manafort.

What they're charged with: Committing tax fraud, failing to file reports on foreign bank and financial accounts, and bank fraud conspiracy.

And this morning -- Why Paul Manafort is having an even worse day today:

Via The New York Times's Mark Mazzetti and Maggie HabermanRichard Gates, a former aide to President Trump's presidential campaign, is expected to plead guilty as soon as this afternoon and will offer to cooperate with the investigation in exchange for a lighter sentence. Bad news for Paul Manafort: "If Mr. Manafort continues to fight the charges in a trial, testimony from Mr. Gates could give Mr. Mueller's team a first-person account of the criminal conduct that is claimed in the indictments -- a potential blow to Mr. Manafort's defense strategy." http://nyti.ms/2GAzRSb

JUST POSTED:
Here's the criminal information that was just posted. Read: http://bit.ly/2Chdkvx
WHEN'S HIS PLEA HEARING:

LATEST ON THE FLORIDA SHOOTING:

Just now — gun proposals in Florida:

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) announced his proposal for changing gun regulations in the state. What it would include: Raising the minimum age to buy a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21; requiring at least one officer for every 1,000 students in public schools; a push to ban bump stocks; and funds for mental health and security in schools. http://nyti.ms/2Cfeg3s

Via The Tampa Bay Times, here’s a list of his proposed changes: http://bit.ly/2HFpEoZ

Latest development -- ugh, this is heartbreaking:
Via The Washington Post's Lori Rozsa and Mark Berman, an armed sheriff's deputy stayed outside of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while the shooter was killing people instead of entering the building. About that officer: Scot Peterson, who was armed and in uniform during the shooting, has resigned. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel "said that Peterson was in an office dealing with a school-related issue when the first shots were fired on Feb. 14 and that he got on his radio and then moved toward the outside of the building where the shooting was taking place. When asked what he is seen doing on the video, Israel replied: 'Nothing.'" Full story: http://wapo.st/2EN7DXT

New poll -- on Trump's handling of the shooting:

Just one-third of Americans approve of the way President Trump has handled last week's deadly shooting at a Florida high school, according to a new CBS News poll. Fifty percent of those surveyed disapprove of the way Trump has handled the shooting, and 17 percent said they didn't know or had no answer. http://bit.ly/2GDc7g3

IN OTHER NEWS:

So it's now WAMU-ist, right?:
Via WAMU.org, "Today WAMU announces the acquisition of beloved neighborhood news site DCist. WAMU joined forces with leading public media outlets across the country – WNYC in New York, and KPCC in Southern California – in acquiring assets from DCist, Gothamist and LAist. The move underscores WAMU's commitment to the local community as it expands its breadth of local news on digital outlets and increases its digital presence." http://bit.ly/2sRy1u6
