President Trump said he would have run into a Florida high school to prevent a gunman from carrying out this month's mass shooting. In his words: "I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon,” Trump told a gathering of governors at the White House. What sparked this: The president was doubling down on his criticism of an armed sheriff’s deputy who did not confront the shooter at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. http://bit.ly/2Co11h6
TRUMP ALSO SAID:
"Don't worry about the NRA,” Trump told the governors. ”They're on our side.”

This morning -- teachers return to Stoneman Douglas:

Via the Sun Sentinel, "a planning day began Monday morning at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School as teachers streamed in and were welcomed by small group of school parents and neighborhood residents carrying welcome back signs and calling out greetings. With deputies guarding the school's entrance, most teachers drove in and waved to their supporters while others walked through -- some smiling, others not." http://bit.ly/2GLVNts

When the students return: Wednesday.

An update on a Parkland shooting victim:

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Maddy Wilford, who was shot numerous times, held a press conference with her family and doctors to discuss her recovery.

Quote from Maddy: "I'm Madeleine Wilford," she said. "I'd just like to say that I am so grateful to be here. And it wouldn't be possible without the doctors and first responders and ... all the love that everyone sent." She thanked her "amazing doctors" and "All the love that's been passed around, I definitely wouldn't be here without it." https://usat.ly/2EWyrB4

Livestream of the news conference: http://bit.ly/2F4l9pw

Wilford's story: Doctors had been fighting to save Wilford's life. "Wilford, a junior on the Eagles basketball team, was shot numerous times during the rampage at her school. Her mother said in a Facebook post that doctors can't be certain exactly how many times she was shot." http://on.si.com/2GLxMmq

Wow -- what a recovery: Here's a clip of a first responder describing reviving Maddy Wilford after the shooting. http://cnn.it/2EXQqH8

The latest controversy: Trump's reelection campaign used a photo of her in the hospital, being visited by the president and first lady, in an email asking for donations.

NEWS OF THE MORNING - DACA:

Now that's a tomorrow problem:
This morning, the Supreme Court declined to hear the Trump administration's challenge to a lower court ruling temporarily blocking it from winding down the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. What this means for Trump.: This is a blow to the Trump administration. What this means for DACA: It eases the pressure for Congress to quickly come up with a fix while a lower court works through its case. http://bit.ly/2Cm5JvA

THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS:

*cough* PARKLAND, FLA. *cough*:

Lawmakers return to Washington this week under rising pressure to act following the latest mass shooting at a high school in Florida. Keep in mind: Both chambers of Congress were in session the day after the shooting in Parkland, Fla., but have been out of town since. What Trump has floated: Comprehensive background checks, raising the minimum age to buy a long rifle to 21, arming teachers and regulations banning devices known as bump stocks that help semi-automatic weapons fire faster. It's still a tough path: Any legislation beyond enforcing existing background check rules faces a tough path to getting a vote in either chamber currently controlled by the GOP – and even a background check bill could be a heavy lift for Congress. http://bit.ly/2sUWheR

Tidbit from the RNC chair: Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel said raising the minimum age of gun purchases to 21 is an idea that is "on the table." http://bit.ly/2sYqEkr

WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING IN CONGRESS:

Honoring Billy Graham: Prominent evangelist Billy Graham will lie in honor in the Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday and Thursday, a rare honor granted to few people in U.S. history.

Immigration: Congress appears poised to miss a March 5 deadline to pass a fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Online sex trafficking: The House is expected to consider bipartisan legislation on Tuesday that would allow the prosecution of websites that facilitate sex trafficking.
