BREAKING

When did you say the Arizona Senate campaign starts and ends? Darn, I'm busy all of those days :/
Controversial former Arizona county sheriff Joe Arpaio just announced he will run for Senate, casting further uncertainty in the state's GOP Senate primary. http://bit.ly/2me3Uqn

Who he's running to replace: Retiring Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.).

How you know sheriff Arpaio: As Maricopa County sheriff, Arpaio used tactics that led to allegations of racial-profiling and mistreating prisoners. He was convicted last year of ignoring a court order related to racial profiling and President Trump pardoned him.

Why this primary will be a fight: Former state Sen. Kelli Ward (R-Ariz.) is also running in the Republican primary. Ward, who has been endorsed by former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon, had been styling herself as the pro-Trump outsider, so Arpaio's entry threatens to cut into her support.  http://bit.ly/2me3Uqn

T MINUS 10 DAYS UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN

'Border wall or shutdown' may become the new 'crying wolf':
President Trump's core campaign promise to build a wall on the Mexican border has become the biggest flashpoint in the fight to keep the government open. Where Trump stands: Trump is using the border wall as a condition for any deal to help people enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration program. He called the wall "desperately needed" during a retreat with GOP leadership over the weekend. http://bit.ly/2AJLKBJ
THIS MORNING:
President Trump met with a bipartisan group of senators at the White House to discuss immigration.
LATER THIS MONTH -- TRUMP DESIGNS CUSTOM #MAGA WALLPAPER FOR HIS BORDER WALL:
President Trump is planning to visit prototypes of the border wall in San Diego at the end of this month.
IN OTHER IMMIGRATION NEWS:
The Trump administration yesterday said it would end the protected status that allows 262,500 immigrants from El Salvador to stay in the country. What those immigrants must do: Either leave the country or what another way to stay legally. http://bit.ly/2DabJ8l

TALK OF THE MORNING

Dems surprise Oprah with. Their. Very. Own. Giveaway -- a patriotic pantsuit!:
Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, Democrats are thrilled by the prospect of an Oprah Winfrey run for president. Winfrey's longtime partner, Stedman Graham, said that a Winfrey bid was "up to the people" and that "she would absolutely do it." Though Democrats across the country have criticized President Trump's lack of experience, they have expressed excitement about the possibility that an amateur politician -- and perhaps the most famous woman in the country -- might run as a Democrat in 2020. http://bit.ly/2DbSY4w
E! NEWS BECOMES THE NEW WALL STREET JOURNAL:
Via The Hill's Niall Stanage, The Oprah buzz has sparked a debate about whether celebrity can translate to political success. http://bit.ly/2CTklmi
WELP, THAT BACKFIRED:
First daughter Ivanka Trump tweeted support for Oprah's Golden Globes speech, drawing instant scrutiny. Her tweet: "Just saw Oprah's empowering & inspiring speech at last night's Golden Globes. Let's all come together, women & men, & say #TIMESUP! #United" Reactions: http://ti.me/2Df3dFi
OP-ED:
Michael Starr Hopkins, who worked on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaigns says he’s “a Democrat who loves Oprah, but she won’t save America as president.” http://bit.ly/2qPYx6j

IN OTHER NEWS

The most spectacular quote I've read all day -- no, week:
Via The Associated Press, Thailand's prime minister reportedly told reporters to talk to a cardboard cutout of himself -- then left. How this went down: "Prayuth Chan-ocha then turned on his heel and walked off, leaving the mock-up behind, to bemused looks and awkward laughter from the Government House press pack." In his words: "If you want to ask any questions on politics or conflict," he said, "ask this guy." http://bit.ly/2CHQWrD

Spotted -- Kim Jong Un with glasses and a fake mustache, registering for eight different Olympic events:
North Korea today said it will send a delegation to the Winter Olympics next month in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Who they're sending: Athletes, high-ranking officials and a cheer squad. Is anyone else curious what this cheer squad will look like?? During the opening ceremony: South Korea reportedly suggested that the two countries have their athletes walk together during the opening ceremony of the games.
WHICH EVENTS NORTH KOREA WILL COMPETE IN:
"North Korea is weak in winter sports and a pair of figure skaters, Ryom Tae Ok and Kim Ju Sik, earlier became the only North Korean athletes to qualify for next month's Pyeongchang Games before the North missed a confirmation deadline. The International Olympic Committee said ... it has 'kept the door open' for North Korea to take part in the games." http://cbsloc.al/2qIG0sp

THIS MORNING

Well this could not be any more fitting right now for D.C..:
Washington, D.C., was engulfed in fog this morning. The photos are pretty stunning:

NOTABLE TWEETS

Omg, Netflix. Well played.:
Back story: A fake excerpt of Michael Wolff's book about the Trump presidency went viral online. The excerpt was about President Trump complaining when he discovered the White House didn't get "the gorilla channel." More from The New York Times: http://nyti.ms/2DbBNA1

Haha, amazing!:
