Dems seek GOP wipeout in California
IRVINE, Calif. — The shared work space in a suburban office park just across the street from the University of California Irvine bustles with young employees walking between glass-walled conference rooms with purpose.

Some work for tech startups, like a virtual photo booth company. Others work for a gum ball machine distributor.

And still others work for another new type of startup that Orange County hasn't seen in recent years: A serious and professionally run Democratic congressional campaign.

TALK OF THE MORNING

In the sports world, everyone equates the end of summer with the start of football season.

In the political world, everyone *now* knows its time to debate the NFL's national anthem policy:

Trump: 'Give me the football. It's that time of year again.'

The Miami Dolphins: Via The Sun-Sentinel, two Miami Dolphins players kneeled during the national anthem before the preseason opener yesterday. Which players: Wide receivers Kenny Stills and Albert WilsonOh and: Dolphins defensive end Robert Quinn raised his fist during the national anthem, though he did remain standing. http://bit.ly/2KNeeQo

The Philadelphia Eagles: Via The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins raised his fist during the anthem. http://bit.ly/2MbpqvF

Flashback: Earlier this summer, the NFL announced a new policy that would have forced players to stand for the anthem. The Dolphins then submitted a nine-page document to the NFL, called "Proper Anthem Conduct," which explained the fines and suspensions that could be leveled on players for kneeling during the national anthem. After an uproar, the NFL put its new policy on hold while it worked on a solution with the players' union. http://bit.ly/2KNeeQo

Then this morning -- Trump. Is. Not. Pleased.:

President Trump renewed his attacks on NFL players who kneel during the national anthem. http://bit.ly/2Mc8Pah

He tweeted:

Happy Friday! I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com@CateMartel and on Facebook.

LATEST MIDTERM NEWS

Hmm, I can't understand what this conflict of interest could be:

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach (R) said he will recuse himself from the vote recount in the state's Republican primary for governor. Why: Well, the primary is between Kobach and incumbent Gov. Jeff Colyer.

KOBACH ARGUES THE RECUSAL IS IRRELEVANT:

"There's really no point to doing it, because the secretary of state actually has no role in the counting of provisional ballots or any recount," Kobach told CNN's Chris Cuomo. "But I said if my opponent wishes me to, I'd be happy to." http://bit.ly/2KEOllC

To quote the wise Jojo, 'It's just too little too late, a little too long':

--> http://bit.ly/2lrzrnT

Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, former President Obama's list of 81 midterm election endorsements came too late in the election cycle, some Democrats argue. How so: "Strategists, ex-Obama aides, and even some of the former president's fundraisers interviewed by The Hill say they were perplexed by Obama's list, which came after most states have held their primaries." Details: http://bit.ly/2OZjNys

We don't want a regular Speaker. We want a *cool Speaker*:

Via NBC's Jack Bohrer and Ali Vitali, more than 50 Democrats running for the House say they won't support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for Speaker. The breakdown: At least 42 Democratic nominees, plus nine incumbents. Other Dems are neutral: 34 Democratic nominees haven't said whether they support Pelosi. https://nbcnews.to/2vBZ6jO

THE PROBLEM FOR DEMOCRATS:

"Despite the opposition, there's still no viable alternative to Pelosi. Many candidates in the undecided category said they're waiting to see who, if anyone, comes forward to take her on -- and only one could-be-contender has done so publicly so far."

HEALTH-CARE COMPANIES ARE ALSO PLANNING FOR A 'BLUE WAVE':

Health insurance and drug companies are preparing for the resurgence of a single-payer health-care debate if Democrats perform well in November. How they're preparing: "Health insurance and drug companies, who are often at odds on policy issues, banded together to form the group, which lobbyists say could run advertisements against single-payer plans and promote studies to undermine the idea." How this could play out, via The Hill's Peter Sullivan: http://bit.ly/2P057z5

IN OTHER NEWS

Tidbit from Omarosa's new book -- not great if true:

Former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault-Newman claims in her new book that President Trump repeatedly used the N-word on the set of his show "The Apprentice." The kicker: While Omarosa says she never heard Trump use the word herself, she claims sources told her there were tapes of Trump using the slur. http://bit.ly/2vB6zQ5

Keep in mind: Via The Daily Beast, Omarosa claims she secretly recorded conversations with President Trump and used them for a book deal. https://thebea.st/2B79KEH

Happening at 3 p.m. EDT:

Jay Sekulow and Rudy Giuliani, both members of President Trump's legal team, are guest-hosting Sean Hannity's radio show. http://bit.ly/2OXUSes

Happening Sunday -- try to avoid Lafayette Square if you can:

Via The Washington Post's Peter Hermann and Joe Heim, D.C. is prepping for what could become a volatile Sunday in the District. Why: The organizer of last year's "Unite the Right" Charlottesville, Va. rally is holding a white-supremacist rally near the White House. How big is the rally expected to be?: Up to 400 white supremacists and up to 1,500 nearby counterprotesters. https://wapo.st/2M6B2ji

WHAT TIME:

The rally kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. http://bit.ly/2AVeddn

LIST AND MAP OF THE ROAD CLOSURES IN D.C. FOR THE RALLIES:

http://bit.ly/2KKGDq5

THIS RALLY WAS DEADLY LAST YEAR -- WHY IS IT HAPPENING AGAIN?:

"Because last year's rally was so violent, it wasn't as easy for Kessler to get approval the second time around. Still, the National Park Service told ABC 12 that it must approve 'First Amendment events.' " Everything you need to know from The Cut: http://bit.ly/2AVeddn

NOTABLE TWEETS
