TALK OF THE MORNING

Why Steve King may not be getting as many holiday party invites this year:

Via The Hill's Scott Wong and Naomi Jagoda, pressure is growing on GOP leaders to denounce Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) for racially offensive comments and his support of white nationalist candidates. What the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is calling for: The ADL "urged GOP leaders to formally censure King and called on Ryan to strip King of his subcommittee chairmanship." http://bit.ly/2SBo6Sj

RARE REACTION FROM NRCC CHAIR:

Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said in a statement, "Congressman Steve King's recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate. We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior." http://bit.ly/2SBo6Sj

REACTION FROM GOP LEADERS SO FAR -- CRICKETS:

Spokespeople for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) did not comment. http://bit.ly/2SBo6Sj

CORPORATE DONORS PULL BACK:

Purina, Intel and Land O'Lakes have pulled their financial support of King. https://nbcnews.to/2zufXXd

It's Thursday. I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com, @CateMartel and on Facebook.

BREAKING

Pittsburgh synagogue shooting suspect pleads not guilty:

Robert Bowers, who is accused of killing 11 people in a Pittsburgh Pa., pleaded not guilty this morning during his arraignment hearing on federal charges. Bowers also requested a jury trial.

How a CBS News Pittsburgh journalist described his demeanor: "KDKA's Andy Sheehan described him as appearing 'unpenitent' and 'Perhaps somewhat defiant.' "

How Bowers looked: He walked into the courtroom in a red jumpsuit and had a large bandage on his arm.

List of the 44 charges against Bowers: https://cbsloc.al/2yNXsNH

NEWS THIS MORNING

President Trump was pressed on his 'enemy of the people' comments:

In an interview with Axios, Jim VandeHei pressed President Trump on his rhetoric that the media is the "enemy of the people." After some back and forth: Trump justified his strategy. "It's my only form of fighting back. I wouldn't be here if I didn't do that." Watch -- the 58-second clip is pretty fascinating: http://bit.ly/2SCz1uQ

HAPPENING AROUND THE WORLD TODAY

Does Google have a Doodle for this?:

Google employees are staging a walkout to protest how the company handled misconduct allegations against executives. Where the walkouts are happening: At offices around the world. When: At 11:10 a.m. in each time zone. http://bit.ly/2AFQj3a

HOW GOOGLE'S CEO REACTED:

Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement: "Earlier this week, we let Googlers know that we are aware of the activities planned for today and that employees will have the support they need if they wish to participate. Employees have raised constructive ideas for how we can improve our policies and our processes going forward. We are taking in all their feedback so we can turn these ideas into action." http://bit.ly/2AFQj3a

WHAT SPARKED THIS WALKOUT:

Last week, The New York Times reported that Google had offered general exit packages to male executives who were accused of harassment. The original report: https://nyti.ms/2RtN1FN

T-MINUS 5 DAYS UNTIL THE ELECTION

Scapegoats are the best goats:

"President Trump's stunning attack on Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on Wednesday is being interpreted by many on Capitol Hill as an attempt to deflect blame and throw the retiring Speaker under the bus should the GOP lose its House majority next week." http://bit.ly/2SAxTrD

How so: Trump tweeted yesterday, "Paul Ryan should be focusing on holding the Majority rather than giving his opinions on Birthright Citizenship, something he knows nothing about! Our new Republican Majority will work on this, Closing the Immigration Loopholes and Securing our Border!" Trump, though, later insisted to reporters that he will not blame anyone for the midterms.

WHY DEMOCRATS ARE NOW MORE CONFIDANT ABOUT THE HOUSE:

http://bit.ly/2CVbaBm

IN OTHER NEWS

Maybe they should have a mock Iowa caucus to decide:

Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, "With as many as 30 candidates expected in the 2020 field, Obama World -- famously a tight-knit group -- may be divided for the first time."

For example: Some of former President Obama's allies are divided between former Vice President Joe Biden, Obama's former attorney general Eric Holder and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick

Keep in mind: As many as 30 Democrats are thinking about running for president in 2020. I'm getting tired just thinking about it.

How this could play out: http://bit.ly/2OkHpfl

Rest in peace:

Longtime Obama aide Michael Robertson died from cancer on Tuesday night, four days before his 42nd birthday. From former President Barack Obama: "Fourteen years ago, a young man named Michael Robertson moved to Chicago to join my staff. He was driven and dedicated, a constant source of wisdom and kindness, someone who jumped into public service because he believed his efforts could help change this country for the better." http://bit.ly/2qo8C72

Getting traction -- a shooting in Manhattan by a man in a mask:

"A man wearing a Scream mask shot two people in New York City just hours after Halloween. The man, who was wearing a ghostly mask from the horror movie Scream and a green jacket, shot a 24-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman in the Washington Heights neighborhood in Manhattan, the New York Police Department says." Keep in mind: The suspects are both reportedly in stable condition. https://ti.me/2RqAdAf
