Conservatives from across the country are meeting right outside of Washington, D.C., for their big annual event, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). Here are the five things to watch:
  1. Will CPAC become a rally for the Second Amendment?
  2. How much will conservatives attack the special counsel investigation?
  3. What do conservatives want to see in the midterms?
  4. Will anyone criticize Trump?
  5. How does CPAC react to far-right French politician Marion Maréchal-Le Pen?

Context for each from The Hill's Ben Kamisar and Scott Wonghttp://bit.ly/2Fn5r6u

News from CPAC:

Newsy line from National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch: She laid into critics of gun rights. "Many in legacy media love mass shootings," Loesch said, referring to the media assembled on risers toward the back. "You guys love it. I'm not saying that you love the tragedy, but I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold to you and many in the legacy media in the back." Watch: http://bit.ly/2Ce5lzp

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre on guns in schools: LaPierre said suggestions to limit guns are "completely ridiculous," arguing more security would increase safety in schools. "The whole idea from some of our opponents that armed security makes us less safe is completely ridiculous. If that's true, armed security makes us less safe, let's just go ahead and remove it from everywhere." http://bit.ly/2CDuT4K

It's Thursday -- the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team won gold last night against Canada. U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A! I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com@CateMartel and on Facebook.

SIGHTS AND SOUNDS AT CPAC:

Tidbit on Vice President Pence's weekends: "Karen Pence says Mike Pence drinks O'Douls with pizza on Friday nights. CPAC crowd groans." http://bit.ly/2HBwzzg

Standing ovation: "Pence gets standing ovation when he says 'we always stand for our flag and national anthem as well.' Chants of USA at CPAC auditorium." http://bit.ly/2BJJ5ML

On the NRA CEO's speech: "CPAC attendee behind me grades the LaPierre speech: "That was ... interesting. That was intense." http://bit.ly/2ohMqLs

NEWS THIS MORNING:

Trump clarifies on whether to give teachers guns:
In a series of tweets this morning, President Trump denied that he suggested giving teachers guns to prevent mass school shootings, instead saying he would consider giving trained teachers concealed weapons. What he said he meant: Trump said he suggested giving concealed guns to "teachers with military or special training experience," adding that a gun free school is a "magnet for bad people." Full explanation: http://bit.ly/2EYs3ME
THIS COULD GET UGLY: :
President Trump is publicly tiptoeing toward support for gun control measures that could put him at odds with the National Rifle Association. http://bit.ly/2HC7PXJ
^^WELL, SO FAR:
President Trump just praised the National Rifle Association and its leadership. He tweeted: "What many people don't understand, or don't want to understand, is that Wayne, Chris and the folks who work so hard at the @NRA are Great People and Great American Patriots. They love our Country and will do the right thing. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" He was referring to NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre and NRA-Institute for Legislative Action executive director Chris Cox. http://bit.ly/2CCTJl9

Trump supports raising the age to buy guns:
President Trump said he will push for comprehensive background checks and for raising the minimum age to buy guns. He tweeted: "I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health. Raise age to 21 and end sale of Bump Stocks! Congress is in a mood to finally do something on this issue -- I hope!" http://bit.ly/2Cdm1H0

TALK OF THE MORNING:

Where do we go from here?:
Yesterday, Students who survived last week's school shooting in Florida had an emotional meeting with President Trump to discuss gun reforms. Video highlights from the event: http://cnb.cx/2EZTHsP

Interesting tidbit: If you look closely in this photo, you can read some of President Trump's notes during the meeting: http://bit.ly/2EYW2o0

Then last night...:
During a CNN town hall last night, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said he supports a law that would raise the age requirement to purchase a rifle and would consider a ban on large-capacity magazines. http://bit.ly/2BLkGqe
OP-ED:
olice chief William G. Brooks of the Norwood, Ma. Police Department argues that police need more mental health training. http://bit.ly/2ChqqsG

The dilemma for Democrats:
Via The Hill's Amie Parnes and Mike Lillis, Democrats are mulling how to approach gun control on the campaign trail this year. The dilemma: They want gun control, but worry it could cost them in the midterm elections. Why: The strategy of advocating increased gun regulation can work in some states, but could backfire in others. Repeating history: Democrats paid a steep political price after championing an assault weapons ban in 1994, and are wary of energizing the GOP base. http://bit.ly/2CcSHQZ
HOW RED STATE DEMS ARE WALKING A TIGHT LINE ON GUNS:

Grynbaum, "Margaret Brennan, the senior foreign affairs correspondent for CBS News, will be the next moderator of 'Face the Nation,' the network's prestige Sunday morning public affairs show and one of the most influential venues in American politics." Who she's replacing: John Dickersonhttp://nyti.ms/2BGwCtb
