NEWS THIS MORNING

Unity, schmunity:

This morning, President Trump blamed what he deems unfair media coverage for causing "great anger in society." He even referred to the media as: "The true Enemy of the People." Yikes. http://bit.ly/2Oc6J79

He tweeted: "There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news. The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People, must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly. That will do much to put out the flame of Anger and Outrage and we will then be able to bring all sides together in Peace and Harmony." http://bit.ly/2Oc6J79

Reaction from a veteran journalist: The New York Times's Maggie Haberman responded to the president's tweet. "It is being reported accurately. This isn't a lack of understanding of the impact of these words. This is a strategy. Describing it as 'he doesn't get it' is a form of grading on a curve." http://bit.ly/2ObhAON

Some context on the president's timing: "Imagine the conclusions you'd draw about another country & its president, if you read that bombs had been mailed to a list of that president's favorite political targets, including a news organization, and that president had soon after called news media the 'enemy of the people.' " (From The New York Times's Alexander Burnshttp://bit.ly/2RpjZYb

Keep in mind: The president has no public events on his schedule. He had an intelligence briefing at 11:30 a.m., but that's it. I.e.: Don't be surprised if he tweets a lot today.

It's Monday and the Boston Red Sox ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS! I'm Cate Martel with a quick recap of the morning and what's coming up. Send comments, story ideas and events for our radar to cmartel@thehill.com@CateMartel and on Facebook.

TALK OF THE MORNING

A horrific shooting in Pittsburgh:

Eleven people were killed this weekend when a shooter opened fire at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. What exactly happened: https://wapo.st/2z7aQf2

PHOTOS AND MEMORIALS FOR EACH OF THE 11 VICTIMS:

Via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: http://bit.ly/2Jli1Ff

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SUSPECT:

Robert Gregory Bowers, 46, was not known to law enforcement prior to the attack. He regularly posted anti-Semitic messages on the social media site Gab and blamed Jewish people for helping the so-called migrant caravan. Five minutes before the shooting: Bowers posted, "Can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I'm going in." Everything we know so far about the suspect: https://cnn.it/2qor0Nv

FROM PEOPLE WHO KNOW BOWERS:

The New York Times's Trip Gabriel, Jack Healy and Julie Turkewitz spoke with Robert Gregory Bowers's neighbors and a childhood friend. The gist: He is an isolated, awkward man. His neighbor said his behavior wasn't concerning. The line that is getting traction: "He was pretty much a ghost," said a childhood friend who lost touch with Bowers in high school. What people who know Bowers said about him: https://nyti.ms/2CPwXdM

HAPPENING AT 1:30 P.M. EDT:

Shooting suspect Robert Gregory Bowers will make his first court appearance. https://nyti.ms/2qh2hKX

REACTIONS

President Trump: The president called the shooting a "wicked act of mass murder." He also said: "Today, with one unified voice, we condemn the historic evil of anti-Semitism and every other form of evil. And we come together as one American people." https://abcn.ws/2EPmj9l

Trump on what should happen to the suspect: "Anybody that does a thing like this where innocent people that are in temple or in church -- we've had so many incidents with churches. They should suffer the ultimate price," Trump told reporters. "They should pay the ultimate price. I've felt that way for a long time. Some people disagree with me. I can't imagine why. But this has to stop." https://abcn.ws/2EPmj9l

^Then right after calling for unity: Within minutes, the president shifted to attacking Democrats by name. https://nyti.ms/2PAe9Gd

First lady Melania Trump: "My heart breaks over the news out of #Pittsburgh. The violence needs to stop. May God bless, guide & unite the United States of America," first lady Melania Trump tweeted. http://bit.ly/2O9LNO8

The congregation's rabbi: During a Sunday night memorial service in Pittsburgh, Rabbi Jeffrey Myers called on U.S. leaders to "stop the words of hate." Excerpt: "It starts with speech. It has to start with you as our leaders. My words are not intended as political fodder. I address all equally. Stop the words of hate." Watch: https://wapo.st/2PstdFA

The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh has been raising money: The center has raised more than $70,000 for the victims and their families. From the center's leader: "We just want to know what you need. ... If it's people outside your next service protecting you, let us know. We'll be there." http://bit.ly/2z9KIQL

Progressive Jewish leaders tell Trump he's not welcome: A group of progressive Jewish leaders wrote in a letter that President Trump is not welcome in Pittsburgh until he denounces white nationalism. From the letter: "Our Jewish community is not the only group you have targeted. You have also deliberately undermined the safety of people of color, Muslims, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. Yesterday's massacre is not the first act of terror you incited against a minority group in our country." The full letter: http://bit.ly/2Q3WfIT

T-MINUS 8 DAYS UNTIL THE MIDTERMS

Where we stand -- yikes we've had a week:

"A week that began with President Trump spreading unfounded claims at a rally in Houston about Democrats and a caravan of migrants ended with arrests in a spate of attempted bombings against prominent Democrats and the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the country's history. Both episodes were met with calls for unity from Democrats and Republicans alike, but neither party indicated they would cede an inch in the debate over responsibility for the attacks." How this could affect the midterms: http://bit.ly/2D91d41

Why Democrats are getting worried about next week:

Via The Hill's Mike Lillis and Amie Parnes, "Democrats are sounding growing alarms in the final push before the midterm elections that the party lacks the message it needs to combat President Trump and win back Democratic majorities in Congress."

I'm sorry, what is this…?: Check out how one supporter decked out their dog for the midterms. Photo: http://bit.ly/2qgKR0I

OTHER NEWS THIS MORNING

ANOTHER suspicious package has been found:

A suspicious package addressed to CNN was intercepted in Atlanta this morning. From CNN president Jeff Zucker: Zucker said all mail is being screened off-site, so the CNN offices were not in danger. http://bit.ly/2Ocjlev

I hope the migrants have good Wi-Fi to see these tweets:

This morning, President Trump pledged to use military to stop the so-called migrant caravan from entering the United States. He tweeted: "Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border. Please go back, you will not be admitted into the United States unless you go through the legal process. This is an invasion of our Country and our Military is waiting for you!" http://bit.ly/2Q5bIIw

IN OTHER NEWS

Getting traction — I know I keep making jokes about 2016 never ending, but ACTUALLY:

During an event this weekend, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton left the door open to a possible 2020 run. The back and forth: "Do you want to run again?" Recode’s Kara Swisher asked Clinton. "No," Clinton replied quickly, sparking laughter from the audience. But when Swisher pressed her further, she added: "I’d like to be president." Watch — she might as well have said 'I'm consulting my family and friends first': http://bit.ly/2zaSutU

Back at his old stomping grounds:

Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh attended Georgetown Preparatory School's homecoming weekend. The gist: Kavanaugh was "hailed as a hero." Tidbit: "Some classmates at the on-campus party were pretty sure that he was dressed in the same dark suit and blue tie that he wore to his bruising Senate Judiciary Committee hearing a month earlier." https://nyti.ms/2zaMhy8
