TALK OF THE MORNING

If you like your birthright citizenship, you can keep it:

In an interview with Axios, President Trump said he will sign an executive order to end birthright citizenship. http://bit.ly/2AAUeOV

In Trump's words: "It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment. Guess what? You don't ... We're the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States ... with all of those benefits," Trump continued. "It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it has to end."

Keep in mind: This would be one of the president's most controversial actions yet and would definitely lead to a fierce legal battle over the 14th Amendment. Also, despite Trump's remarks other countries also offer birthright citizenship.

When the full interview will air: Sunday at 6:30 p.m. EDT/PDT on HBO

REACTIONS TO THE PLAN:

Republican Rep. Carlos Curbelo (Fla.) blasted Trump: "Birthright citizenship is protected by the Constitution, so no @realDonaldTrump you can't end it by executive order," Curbelo tweeted. "What we really need is broad immigration reform that makes our country more secure and reaffirms our wonderful tradition as a nation of immigrants." http://bit.ly/2JqHey4

The American Civil Liberties Union is also against Trump's plan: The ACLU tweeted, "This is a blatantly unconstitutional attempt to fan the flames of anti-immigrant hatred in the days ahead of the midterms. The 14th Amendment's citizenship guarantee is clear. You can't erase the Constitution with an executive order, [President Trump.]" http://bit.ly/2DeYWof

But Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) agreed with Trump: Graham said he will introduce legislation to end birthright citizenship. Graham also tweeted: "Finally, a president willing to take on this absurd policy of birthright citizenship. I've always supported comprehensive immigration reform -- and at the same time -- the elimination of birthright citizenship." http://bit.ly/2CPLxlg'

HAPPENING TODAY

Funerals in Pittsburgh:

Funerals for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting are beginning today. https://n.pr/2Ddojq6

Whose funerals are today: Cecil Rosenthal, 59, David Rosenthal, 54, and Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz, 66

Wow -- photo outside the first funeral: Here's the line outside the Rosenthal brothers' funeral. Photo: http://bit.ly/2Q1nT93

Because the bodies cannot be left alone: "All night long, Jewish volunteers stood solemnly in the rain outside the Tree of Life synagogue, where 11 dead bodies lay inside, sealed off with yellow crime-scene tape. The deceased were not supposed to be left alone, according to Jewish tradition, from the moment of death until burial. So when the medical examiner removed the bodies at 5 a.m. Sunday, the volunteers were there to escort them to the morgue." Full story in The New York Times: https://nyti.ms/2AAnyVW

Tidbit about the community: BuzzFeed's Julia Reinstein tweeted, "Stopped into the local Jewish deli for a break and a bite and told the woman who took my order why I was in town. She said they're so busy this week -- lots of people in need of good Jewish comfort food here. (She also brought me over extra matzo ball soup and free coffee.)" Photo: http://bit.ly/2yC1BEk

President Trump visiting Pittsburgh:

President Trump is traveling to Pittsburgh this afternoon to pay his respects to the victims of last weekend's synagogue shooting. Trump told Fox News: "I really look forward to going. I would have done it even sooner, but I didn't want to disrupt any more than they already had disruption." https://n.pr/2SsYYx7

WHY TRUMP'S VISIT IS CONTROVERSIAL:

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto (D) said on CNN that he wished the president would visit another time to allow the city to focus on the funerals. In Peduto's words: "I do believe that it would be best to put the attention on the families this week and if he were to visit choose a different time to be able to do it," Peduto said. "Our focus as a city will be on the families and the outreach they will need this week and the support they'll need to get through it." http://bit.ly/2Q6OHos

BUT THE TREE OF LIFE RABBI WELCOMES TRUMP:

The Tree of Life synagogue's Rabbi Jeffrey Myers told CNN, "The president of the United States is always welcome. I'm a citizen. He's my president. He is certainly welcome." http://bit.ly/2PsmTOy

REPUBLICANS AND DEMOCRATS DECLINE TO JOIN THE PRESIDENT:

The top congressional leaders from both parties declined an invitation from the White House to join President Trump in Pittsburgh today. Why: Republicans blamed scheduling conflicts; Democrats decided not to attend. http://bit.ly/2OVYDVr

Must read from a reporter for The Hill who is from Squirrel Hill:

The Hill's Niv Elis writes, "When I heard that there was an active shooter at a Pittsburgh synagogue early Saturday morning, I froze. I grew up in Squirrel Hill, about five blocks from the Tree of Life congregation, where the media was already reporting several fatalities.

"It's jarring to see your childhood neighborhood's name trending on Twitter, as national news outlets and presidents, past and current, speak its name. It's odd to think that one hateful man's actions will associate the community's name forever more with tragedy. It's bewildering to see your home transform before your eyes from the place you went to school and played in the park and hung out with your friends into a synonym for horror, the freshest entry on a tragic list."

IN OTHER NEWS

Let's reschedule?:

Via The Hill's Lydia Wheeler, the Trump administration is asking the Supreme Court to delay the trial on whether to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census. Why: "The government wants the trial to be postponed until the Supreme Court settles a dispute over whether Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and another high-ranking administration officials can be forced to give sworn testimony under oath about how the decision to add the controversial question was made and who was involved." http://bit.ly/2JskCNM

Been there, done that:

Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, longtime advisers and confidants to Hillary Clinton say she's definitely not running for president again. "She's more likely to win Powerball," Philippe Reines, Clinton's longtime adviser, told The Hill. Could that change?: Clinton's confidants say there are no internal discussions about her running again. http://bit.ly/2Rm0yzp

A rare sighting of an octopus that looks like Dumbo:
