NEWS OF THE MORNING

Just announced -- Today feels like a good day for jobs:

Trump: 'Who me? Yeeeeeah, I did that...'

The U.S. economy added a robust 223,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department announced this morning. The unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, the lowest level since April 2000. What was expected for May: 200,000. Oh and: Job gains were 15,000 more than previously reported in March and April. http://bit.ly/2syljNo

UHHHH, TRUMP WASN'T SUPPOSED TO TWEET THIS:

Via The Washington Post's Damian PalettaPresident Trump tweeted his excitement about the jobs numbers 69 minutes before the Labor Department released the numbers, breaking decades of protocol. What Trump tweeted at 7:21 a.m.: "Looking forward to seeing the employment numbers at 8:30 this morning." Reaction: "Treasury yields moved sharply higher within seconds." https://wapo.st/2J8psin

Context: "The jobs data come out once a month and often can lead to massive buying or selling trends on Wall Street, depending on how the information is received. It is extremely closely held and kept under tight control until it is released at 8:30 a.m. on the first Friday of each month." The numbers are often privately shared with the president beforehand. https://wapo.st/2J8psin

It's a tough job being friends with Jared Kushner:

Via NBC's Carol E. Lee and Julia Ainsley, "A close friend of Jared Kushner has come under scrutiny by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for his proximity to some key meetings between Trump associates and foreign officials, according to five people familiar with the matter." Who: Richard Gerson, a hedge-fund manager in New York. Full story: https://nbcnews.to/2xy6Y9x

President Donald Pardon:

Via The Hill's Niall Stanage, "President Trump's use of the presidential power of the pardon is under scrutiny once again, after he announced on Thursday he would erase the conviction of conservative commentator Dinesh D'Souza." Why critics are on edge: "The political nature of some of Trump's pardons disquiets his critics -- especially when set against the backdrop of his jabs at the Department of Justice (DOJ), FBI and special counsel Robert Mueller." Why Trump's pardons are so unusual: http://bit.ly/2LbYFCc

What's going on in Trump's head following the latest school shooting:

Via The Associated Press's Jonathan LemirePresident Trump sat down yesterday with the families of students who were killed or injured in last month's school shooting in Texas. Rhonda Hart, whose 14-year-old daughter was killed, told The Associated Press that the president kept mentioning arming teachers. "Trump repeatedly used the word 'wacky' to describe the shooter and the trench coat he wore. She said she told Trump, 'Maybe if everyone had access to mental health care, we wouldn't be in the situation.'" More from the back and forth: http://bit.ly/2LNF0cS

Fascinating read – what do you get when you mix a Clinton and a Bernie? A Warren:

Via The Hill's Amie Parnes, 2016 brought out a division within the Democratic Party – Hillary Clinton vs. Bernie Sanders – a split that still hasn't healed. But the good news for Dems: Though Clinton had more centrist positions, her allies say they could see themselves supporting the more progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) One complication: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is contemplating another presidential bid, which could split the liberal vote. http://bit.ly/2J5kyCB

Wageco, amirite?:

Costco announced it will increase its minimum wage to $14 an hour. Costco's minimum wage now: $13 an hour. When the change will take effect: June 11. Reasoning: Costco's finance chief said the change will cost $110 million to $120 million, but is expecting a 7 percent drop in taxes from the GOP tax cuts. The trend: Walmart and Starbucks are among the other big companies to have also raised wages after the GOP-backed tax bill passed. http://bit.ly/2sz6Lgv

New -- Your Facebook feed will start looking a little different:

Via The Associated Press's Barbara Ortutay, Facebook will stop featuring 'Trending Topics.' Why: "The company claims the tool is outdated and wasn't popular. But the trending section also proved problematic in ways that would presage Facebook's later problems with fake news, political balance and the limitations of artificial intelligence in managing the messy human world." Anything to replace the trending topics?: Facebook is testing a 'breaking news' label and is planning to feature more local news. http://bit.ly/2J0XI37
