GETTING TRACTION

OK, let's ask high school students who have even a vague interest in PR -- Is this...

A) A good idea
B) A bad idea
C) Neutral
D) Why would you--
E) http://bit.ly/2KctPcK
F) No, but seriously, why would you--:

Via CNN's Betsy Klein, first lady Melania Trump visited the U.S.-Mexico border yesterday to meet with immigrant children. But the real story: Melania wore an extremely controversial jacket. The back of the jacket reads: "I really don't care. Do u?" https://cnn.it/2ttdgSw

CNN'S KLEIN TWEETED A BIT OF CONTEXT:

"Hearing from a lot of you about the jacket. Here's why it is fair to question the message: the First Lady brought 13 journalists -- reporters, producers, still & video photographers, on this trip. She knew we were standing under plane wing w/ cameras ready when she got out of SUV." http://bit.ly/2MgSqO9

MELANIA'S SPOKESPERSON RESPONDED:

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message," first lady communications director Stephanie Grisham said in a statement. "After today's important visit to Texas, I hope the media isn't going to choose to focus on her wardrobe," adding, "(Much like her high heels last year)." http://bit.ly/2loKUoS

^^YEAH, BUT:

President Trump tweeted, " 'I REALLY DON'T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania's jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!" http://bit.ly/2Mghd4W

WHERE MELANIA GOT THE JACKET:

It's a $39 jacket from Zara. http://bit.ly/2JYsxFW

NEWS THIS MORNING

You're going to need a warrant for that:

Via The Hill's Lydia Wheeler, the Supreme Court just ruled that law enforcement need warrants to search and seize cellphone records that would show a person's location. The ruling: 5-4. http://bit.ly/2lqBjxN

Just now -- let's fix this opioid problem:

Via The Hill's Peter Sullivan and Juliegrace Brufke, "the House [just] passed bipartisan legislation to fight the epidemic of opioid overdoses, the culmination of months of work on the crisis. The measure, which passed 396 to 14, is the broadest of dozens of bills passed by the House over the past two weeks on the topic." http://bit.ly/2trBYCQ

Next up on Trump's hit list -- European cars:

This morning, President Trump threatened to place a 20 percent tariff on European cars entering the United States. He tweeted: "Based on the Tariffs and Trade Barriers long placed on the U.S. and it great companies and workers by the European Union, if these Tariffs and Barriers are not soon broken down and removed, we will be placing a 20% Tariff on all of their cars coming into the U.S. Build them here!" http://bit.ly/2KbC60v

Tesla downsizes:

Via Reuters's Nichola Groom, Salvador Rodriguez and Kristina Cooke, Tesla is closing more than a dozen solar facilities in nine states. Context: The company will keep 60 facilities open, but will close 13 or 14. https://reut.rs/2yxG0iN

KEEP IN MIND:

Ten days ago, Tesla cut 9 percent of its staff. https://cnnmon.ie/2MNNUaM

TALK OF THE MORNING

Trump: This feels like a '2019 problem':

President Trump told Republicans to "stop wasting their time" to come up with an immigration compromise. He tweeted: "Republicans should stop wasting their time on Immigration until after we elect more Senators and Congressmen/women in November. Dems are just playing games, have no intention of doing anything to solves this decades old problem. We can pass great legislation after the Red Wave!" http://bit.ly/2yytcJ7

AND ABOUT THE STORIES OF SEPARATION WE'VE BEEN HEARING:

President Trump called them "phony." He tweeted: "We must maintain a Strong Southern Border. We cannot allow our Country to be overrun by illegal immigrants as the Democrats tell their phony stories of sadness and grief, hoping it will help them in the elections. Obama and others had the same pictures, and did nothing about it!" http://bit.ly/2K840xJ

Eh, but -- Republican leaders want it to be a 'next week problem':

House GOP leaders punted the highly anticipated immigration vote, which was already postponed once, until next week. http://bit.ly/2tvMV6j

Why this is important: It underscores the difficulty leaders are facing to get enough votes. The separation crisis on the U.S.-Mexico border only raised the stakes.

When the vote was postponed: During a two-hour conference meeting where leaders briefed members on the contents of the bill and were unable to get enough lawmakers to coalesce behind the bill.

Members' concern: The 300-page bill was released Tuesday night, so they didn't have enough time to digest its contents. Conservatives are also concerned it provides what they see as amnesty to some undocumented workers.

IN OTHER NEWS

Rest in peace, Charles Krauthammer:

"Charles Krauthammer, a longtime Fox News contributor, Pulitzer Prize winner, Harvard-trained psychiatrist and best-selling author who came to be known as the dean of conservative commentators, died Thursday. He was 68." Condolences from colleagues: https://fxn.ws/2lt5rZi
