THE KAVANAUGH CONFIRMATION SAGA IS OVER

The entire country has a Supreme Court nomination hangover:

Brett Kavanaugh's brutal confirmation battle may be over, but the fight could have a lasting effect on his career in the Supreme Court. "Kavanaugh's charged response to allegations of sexual assault ... has raised concerns among some court watchers about how his anger might influence his conduct on the bench, and whether it will prevent him from being an independent and impartial justice." What legal experts say to expect: http://bit.ly/2zYCDQR

ABOUT KAVANAUGH'S SWEARING IN CEREMONIES:

Right after the Senate confirmation vote, Kavanaugh was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy in a private ceremony. But tonight, President Trump will hold an official ceremony for Kavanaugh. https://nyti.ms/2RBYgwK

TRUMP DEFENDS COMMENTS ON CHRISTINE BLASEY FORD:

Over the weekend, President Trump defended his criticism of Christine Blasey Ford, who accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her in high school, saying he needed to "even the playing field." In Trump's words: "Well, there were a lot of things happening that weren't correct, they weren't true and there were a lot of things that were left unsaid. And I thought I had to even the playing field." Keep in mind: Trump received a lot of criticism for mocking Ford. http://bit.ly/2NupeU4

MCCONNELL SAYS HE'S OPEN TO ANOTHER SCOTUS NOMINATION IN 2020:

Via The Associated Press's Hope Yen, "The Senate's majority leader, insisting his chamber won't be irreparably damaged by the bitter fight over new Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, is signaling he's willing to take up another high court nomination in the 2020 presidential election season should another vacancy arise. 'We'll see if there is a vacancy in 2020,' said Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky." http://bit.ly/2zYyqwk

HAPPENING TODAY

It's nothing a Florida daytrip can't fix:

President Trump is speaking at the annual conference of the International Association of Chiefs of Police in Orlando this afternoon. Guess who is joining Trump?!: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. Remember the drama a few weeks ago over whether Rosenstein would be fired? That feels like it happened years ago. http://bit.ly/2PgS7o9

LATE THIS MORNING -- TRUMP SAYS HE HAS NO PLANS TO FIRE ROSENSTEIN:

Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One, the president said he has a "good relationship" with Rosenstein. "I look forward to being with him, that'll be very nice. We're going to be talking. We'll be talking on the plane." He also said: "I actually have a good relationship -- other than there's been no collusion folks, no collusion." http://bit.ly/2pHaRST
