UPDATES ON THE SPENDING FIGHT
To the tune of 'Rocking around the Christmas Tree' -- sitting around the Capitol, crossing their fingers about holiday plans http://gph.is/2kB4ONl:
Republicans have little time to pass a spending bill and avoid a government shutdown. Credit: Getty

House Republicans appear close to locking in the necessary votes to keep the government open past Friday's deadline. How close they are: GOP leaders are "inching closer" to the magic number of 217 votes for both a stopgap bill and a disaster aid package, a GOP leadership source told The Hill. But the source cautioned that it wasn't a done deal. Back story: Defense hawks and members of the House Freedom Caucus balked last night at plans for a short-term bill. But there is little time to avoid a shutdown, and Republicans are eager not to overshadow Wednesday's big tax win. http://bit.ly/2p7N8xG

The noise that's been constantly going through my mind: http://bit.ly/2CSOuhV

When the House is hoping to get outta here: This afternoon. http://bit.ly/2kxFIPG

This was a good sign: House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-N.C.) said several members of his group flipped from "no" to "yes" after striking a deal with leadership on a temporary reauthorization of a surveillance program. http://bit.ly/2kT6XDH

This morning: The House Rules Committee met to consider the temporary spending bill that would fund the government through Jan. 19. Livestream: http://cs.pn/2CRgtOW

When the government will shut down if there's no deal: Friday night at midnight.

THIS MORNING

I'm picturing Trump in a crossing guard outfit -- please direct your blame to the left. Single-file. No pushing please. Everyone will have his or her chance:
This morning, President Trump accused Democrats of trying to force a government shutdown. He tweeted: "House Democrats want a SHUTDOWN for the holidays in order to distract from the very popular, just passed, Tax Cuts. House Republicans, don't let this happen. Pass the [continuing resolution] TODAY and keep our Government OPEN!" http://bit.ly/2kyMGUx

NEW ADDITION -- the gang knew the optics here wouldn't be great:
House Republicans have included $2.85 billion to extend funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in a temporary spending measure intended to prevent a government shutdown. How long it would fund CHIP: Through the end of March. Keep in mind: This program provides support for 9 million children in the U.S. http://bit.ly/2BJyaAx

HAPPENING AT THE UNITED NATIONS

BREAKING -- the U.N. votes to condemn Trump's Jerusalem decision:
The United Nations just delivered a stunning rebuke of President Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. How: They just cast an overwhelming vote calling on the U.S. to withdraw the decision. The vote: The final vote count in favor of the resolution was 128. Nine countries abstained from the vote, and 35 opposed the resolution. Keep in mind: The resolution is not legally binding. But it is represents a symbolic condemnation and exerts political pressure on the U.S. to reverse the move. http://bit.ly/2BXmxIT

Merry Christmas, North Korea!!:
Via Reuters, the United Nations could hold a vote as early as tomorrow on a resolution that would slap new sanctions on North Korea. Details of the sanctions: It would reportedly block roughly 90 percent of refined petroleum product exports to the country, as well as the return of North Korean citizens working abroad. http://reut.rs/2kA7hI9

IN OTHER NEWS

TRENDING -- Apple is doing what, you say??:
Via CNBC's Todd Haselton, have you ever noticed that older iPhones take longer to open apps and run them? Well, Apple just admitted that they purposely slow down the processors on older iPhones. Why: Apple says it's to preserve older batteries. "Rather than intentionally slowing devices to keep them from shutting down ... it should do right by its customers who expect their pricey iPhones to last more than a couple of years." Full story: https://yhoo.it/2Bw39Da

HAPPENING TODAY -- holidays in Gitmo:
Via The Associated Press's Robert Burns, Defense Secretary James Mattis met with troops at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Why this is big: Mattis became the first Defense chief since 2002 to go to Guantanamo. He did not tour the detention facility there or discuss the Trump administration's policies regarding its detainees. http://bit.ly/2kX1MCm

This race has been nuts -- the election winner will be picked out of a hat:
The Virginia Election board will pick the winner of a tied race by a random draw. Names on the ballot: Democratic candidate Shelly Simonds and GOP incumbent Del. David YanceyHow this even happened: Yancey originally won the race by only 10 votes, triggering a recount. The recount then showed Simonds winning the seat by just one vote (!), but a ballot that had been thrown out was then counted for Yancey, producing a tie vote. How this random pick will happen: The names of the two tied candidates will be printed on pieces of paper, which will then be placed inside separate film canisters and into a bowl. A member of the board of elections will pick one of the canisters to declare the winner. http://bit.ly/2Bfwlu4

NOTABLE TWEETS

You tell 'em, congressman!

Lolol:

ON TAP

The House and Senate are in.

President Trump and Vice President Pence have no public events scheduled.

Friday night: When the government would shut down if Congress doesn't pass a spending bill.

 WHAT TO WATCH

This is incredible: The Hill's Jordan Fabian asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders whether President Trump believes in UFOs. Why the?: This came after a report of a secret Pentagon program that investigated UFOs. Her answer was pretty funny: http://bit.ly/2Bf4tWY

NOW FOR THE FUN STUFF...

Today is National Fried Shrimp Day.

"Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. There's uh, shrimp kebabs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan-fried, dee- fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it." http://bit.ly/2qQ22IG

Why you should cancel a few of your holiday plans:
Via Thrillist, here's a list of the movies and TV shows that are leaving Netflix in January. The list: http://bit.ly/2BKK4Kw

Calling all political geeks ;)
A presidential pollster has created a virtual game that allows players to recreate the 2016 presidential election and see who can get to 270 Electoral College votes. Photo of the game and how it works: http://bit.ly/2DpF7qL

And because this is what's getting me through the day, here's what I really wish my Christmas tree looked like: http://bit.ly/2DlpC3g
