Over 700 stores are closing across the nation. / Credit: Getty

THROWBACK -- OH WOW, ADS HAVE CHANGED:
Here's a Toys R Us commercial from the 1980s. Watch: http://bit.ly/2Gu7giz

ALSO ANNOUNCED:

New Russia sanctions -- take that, Putin:
Via The Hill's Jonathan Easley, the U.S. is imposing new sanctions on Russian individuals and entities in response to cyberattacks in the U.S. and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Details: The U.S. will sanction five entities and 19 individuals from Russia for a range of cyberattacks, including the disruptive 2016 Petya attack and Russia's "destabilizing efforts" in the 2016 presidential election. The Treasury Department will freeze those assets and prohibit Americans from doing business with those Russians, officials said. http://bit.ly/2Duo3im

Next up in the shark tank:
This morning, President Trump officially confirmed that he is tapping conservative commentator Larry Kudlow to serve as his White House economic adviser. http://bit.ly/2Gtlno8
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT KUDLOW:
Larry Kudlow is a media personality who hosted several CNBC programs over the years. He agreed with the president's tax cuts, but wrote an op-ed criticizing President Trump's tariffs. Recently, though, Kudlow has suggested he is now on board with some tariffs. More about Kudlow: http://ti.me/2tRFOZq

BEHIND THE SCENES:

It's not you, it's m--, no, no, it was actually you:
Via The Washington Post's Ashley Parker, Philip Rucker, Josh Dawsey and Carol D. LeonnigPresident Trump wanted to fire secretary of state Rex Tillerson last Friday, but chief of staff John Kelly talked him into waiting until he was back from Africa. Ouch: "Trump quickly soured on Tillerson and made no secret of his dislike. He mocked his mannerisms and Texas drawl, saying his secretary of state talked too slowly. In conversations with advisers and friends, the president would often list others he said would do a better job than Tillerson, whom he frequently labeled 'weak.' " Full story: http://wapo.st/2GtYSPV
JUST NOW -- TRUMP: FAAAALSE:
President Trump insisted that media reports about an imminent White House staff shake-up are "false" and "exaggerated." What sparked this: Trump shocked Washington earlier this week with his abrupt dismissal of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, provoking speculation that he could be looking to clean-house among those Cabinet members and senior officials who have disappointed him. http://bit.ly/2peWx3c
WHAT GINA HASPEL SHOULD EXPECT IN HER CONFIRMATION HEARING:
Via The Hill's Katie Bo Williams, Senate confirmation of President Trump's pick to lead the CIA, agency Deputy Director Gina Haspel, will likely hinge on how the 30-year intelligence veteran handles questions about her involvement in the agency's brutal interrogations of terrorism suspects in the post-9/11 era. Keep in mind: Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said he would oppose her nomination, leaving Republicans with the bare minimum 50 votes needed to confirm her. Annnd that's if there are no other GOP defections and if Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is undergoing treatment for brain cancer, returns to vote. http://bit.ly/2HAE20D
ARGUMENT FOR HASPEL:
Former CIA Director Michael Hayden argues that Gina Haspel is a good choice to run the spy agency. http://bit.ly/2FMyEae

IN OTHER NEWS:

It's pep talk time!:
Via The Hill's Alexander Bolton, Sen. Cory Gardner (Colo.), chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, gave colleagues a pep talk during a private meeting Tuesday, showing confidence about Republicans expanding their majority in November. His main talking point: Highlighting poll numbers showing Republicans beating five vulnerable Democratic incumbents. http://bit.ly/2tQeQkN
FIVE TAKEAWAYS ON PENNSYLVANIA:
Democrat Conor Lamb looks likely to win the close special election for Pennsylvania's 18th District. Here are five takeaways from The Hill's Ben Kamisar and Lisa Hagen: http://bit.ly/2FCWDg1

THE COOLEST STORY I'VE READ THIS WEEK:

Being in space really can change a guy...:
Via The New York Post's Chris Perez, astronaut Scott Kelly no longer has matching DNA to his identical twin brother. Wow: "In a groundbreaking new study, NASA scientists found that Kelly's DNA had been altered upon his return to earth -- with 7 percent of his genes experiencing an "unexpected change," according to the agency." How Kelly learned: From media reports. He tweeted: "What? My DNA changed by 7%! Who knew?" he tweeted. "I just learned about it in this article. This could be good news! I no longer have to call [Mark Kelly] my identical twin brother anymore." http://bit.ly/2Dv1mKJ
